Attend Co-op AGMs to vote on trade supporting Israeli Occupation.

By suzannei on April 18, 2012

At this year’s AGMs Co-operative group members will have the opportunity to vote on a motion calling on the group to cease trade with companies complicit in the Israeli occupation of the occupied Palestinian territories.  This would build on the co-op’s existing
policy of not stocking goods from the settlements.  A lot of work has gone into getting these motions onto the agenda but for them to succeed support will be needed from informed co-op members at the various meetings.

Regional AGMs are being held around the UK between 28 April and 30
May.  If you are a Co-op member please consider attending your local meeting and giving your support.

Dates and locations of meetings are listed below.  You will need to register youyr attendance in
advance which can be done easily on line at https://www.co-operativememberevents.coop/coop_ems/search-results-page.aspx?rsg.ref=members_meetings&area.ref=

The motion will appear as follows on posters and AGM communications:

“The membership calls on the Co-operative Group to build on its current policy and cease trading with Agrexco, Ahava and other companies whose trade plays a key role in maintaining and extending the settlements within the Jordan valley and other parts of the West Bank.”

Friends may be interested to know that since these motions were sumbitted, the Co-op has extended its human rights policy.

Th group has recently released announced that it will @no longer engaging with any supplier of produce known to be sourcing from the Israeli settlements”.

The decision will hit four companies (Agrexco, Arava Export Growers, Adafresh and Mehadrin.) and will see the cancellation of contracts worth some £350,000. The Co-op will continue to carry out business with other Israeli companies that can guarantee they don’t export from illegal settlements.
