Campaigns update: Debt and ‘dodgy deals’

QPSW partner the Jubilee Debt Campaign is directing its attention to the Export Credit Guarantee Department (ECGD), a government department supporting British business operating abroad.  Some ECGD activities have been linked to corruption, environmental destruction and human rights abuse.  Furthermore, when things go wrong, ECGD activities can undermine poverty reduction efforts by adding to developing [...]

At their 2010 Annual General Meetings (AGMs) in April and May, oil companies BP and Shell will face special resolutions at which shareholders will challenge their Alberta tar sands projects…  Critics say that [...]

Take – and promote – the equality pledge

At the Equality, Prosperity & Growth event held on the 4th March (see www.quaker.org.uk/prosperity) the audience were urged to use the opportunity of the forthcoming General Election to raise the issue of the damaging nature that high levels of inequality have on societies. One suggestion was that we as individuals can sign up to the [...]

The Robin Hood Tax

I have been very impressed by the ideas for a tiny tax on bank to bank transactions put forward by Richard Curtis and Bill Nighy which they are calling the ‘Robin Hood’ tax. This would generate billions of pounds a year half of which would be spent in Britain on issues such as child poverty, [...]

Stand Up!

Tagged

I’d really like to encourage Friends to get involved in Stand Up as many Friends have in previous years. It’s a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate to our leaders that citizens really do care about poverty and climate change, and to stand in solidarity with people affected by these issues around the world.
There are many ways [...]

Campaigns and Advocacy

The abolition of slavery, the writing-off of billions of pounds worth of developing country debts and the mainstreaming of Fairtrade products are just some of the positive economic changes that have happened as a result of ordinary people campaigning to persuade political or economic decision makers to do things differently.

This page is a space for campaigners to share news, information, resources and experience about campaigns or advocacy work they are involved in.

If you are involved in a campaign that is already highlighted please share your actions, thoughts or experience through the comment facility. Alternatively if you are part of a campaign or advocacy initiative that isn’t listed please start a new post. You will need to register as a blogger to do this. (Please click on ‘register’ and follow the instructions to add your post.)

Campaigns/ initiatives should be aimed at contributing towards a fair economy for people and planet, should be conducted non-violently and be in accordance with other Quaker values. All campaign posts will be approved before posting.
