Anne Pettifor in Reading

Anne Pettifor (who helped launch Jubilee 2000 and is one of the authors of the Green New Deal) gave a very interesting talk at Reading University yesterday (20th October). Her main focus was on the role of money in the economy and how it is created by the banks. She argued for the regulation of this process for the public benefit rather than for the advantage of the financial elite.

The role of money and its creation is touched on in Tony Weekes’ ‘The Economic Crisis – a Quaker Response’ and is the subject of work by James Robertson, the original guru of alternative economics. Talk of radical reform of the money system may take many of us beyond our comfort zone, but just maybe it is one of the keys to moving to a prosperous, sustainable and less inequitable society?

Also in Reading, on Wednesday 28th October John Christensen of Tax Justice Network will be at Reading Quaker Meeting House from 7.30: definitely worthwhile if you can make it.

Anne Pettifor is an excellent speaker and writer, and I am delighted to hear that (at least one) university is givingher a hearing. Her book, The Coming First World Debt Crisis (Palgrave, 2006) is a remarkably prescient document and her presentation at the CTBI meeting in London last January can be accessed at website http://www.ctbi.org.uk/pdf_view.php?id=312. All good stuff. James Robertson – another eloquent and well-informed writer – has his own website http://www.jamesrobertson.com, and sends to subscribers (for free!) an occasional e-newsletter which is well worth having.
The Ecumenical Council for Corporate Responsibility and its associates have designated the period from Sunday 8th – Saturday 14th November as National Ethical Investment Week. More information at http://www.eccr.org.uk and http://www.neiw.org. Not the complete answer to monetary reform, but worth reflecting on.
