Registration of marriage

Certified copies from marriage registers

16.48

For marriages in England & Wales the Registrar General supplies, on request, a book of forms for issuing to an applicant a certified copy of any entry in the marriage registers. A registering officer shall, if required, issue a certified copy of any entry in any of the marriage registers of the area meeting by which he or she is appointed. For this an appropriate fee is payable. At least one copy is made for the couple in any case after the marriage. No one but the registering officer may sign a certified copy. In cases of doubt, due to any change of area meeting area, the Recording Clerk shall determine which registering officer has authority to certify such a copy.

For marriages in Scotland, application should be made to the district registrar.
