Registration of marriage

Correction of errors

16.49

In filling up the registers (for marriages in England & Wales) great care must be taken that no error is committed. On the discovery afterwards of any error in an entry, the registering officer shall, within one calendar month after such discovery, in the presence of the parties married, or, in the case of their absence, then in the presence of the superintendent registrar of the district, and of two other witnesses (who are respectively to attest to the same), correct the error by entry in the margin without any alteration of the original entry, and he or she shall sign the marginal entry and shall add to it the date when the correction is made. In Scotland, these matters are dealt with by the district registrar.
